13. Crushed Tissue Paper & Mod Podge Suncatchers
Introduction
Luminous, stained-glass style window decorations made by layering translucent pastel tissue paper squares onto clear contact paper or translucent parchment.
What This Idea Means
Explores light transmission, color mixing, and spatial awareness. Toddlers love crumpling paper, and this project channels that natural tendency into productive textural art.
Materials Needed
- Bleeding or standard tissue paper in pastel tones (peach, butter, lilac, mint)
- Clear self-adhesive contact paper
- Heavy cardstock for the outer bunny frame
- Child-safe scissors
- Suction cup hook for window mounting
How to Make It
- Cut a bold bunny silhouette frame out of thick cardstock so the center is open like a window.
- Place the frame onto the sticky side of a sheet of clear contact paper.
- Show your toddler how to tear and crumple small tissue paper bits and press them inside the open frame space.
- Seal with a second sheet of contact paper over the top and trim neatly around the cardstock border.
- Hang on a sunny window and watch the colored light illuminate the room.
Tips and Variations
- Geometric Mosaic: Cut the tissue into precise little triangles and squares to introduce basic geometric patterns.
- Nature Infusion: Mix small pressed dried flower petals among the tissue paper for a natural stained-glass effect.
