12. Polymer Clay Terrazzo Geometric Keychains
What This Idea Means
Terrazzo keychains feature speckled, mosaic-style patterns reminiscent of retro Italian stone composite floors. Cut into modern archways, circles, or geometric shapes, these polymer clay charms provide an elevated, modern interior design aesthetic.
Materials Needed
- White or off-white polymer clay (for the base slab)
- Small scraps of polymer clay in 3–5 accent colors (terracotta, mustard, teal, black, sage)
- Acrylic clay roller and tile surface
- Clay cutter shapes (arches, half-moons, circles)
- Fine-grit sandpaper (400 to 1000 grit)
- Clay drill or hole punch tool
- Parchment paper, baking sheet, jump rings, and key rings
How to Make It
- Condition your white base polymer clay and roll it flat with an acrylic roller until it is roughly 3mm thick.
- Slice your accent clay scraps into tiny, irregular specks and flat flakes using a sharp clay blade.
- Scatter the tiny colored clay flakes randomly across the top of your white clay slab.
- Place a sheet of parchment paper over the slab and roll firmly over it with your acrylic roller to flatten the chips smoothly into the base clay until seamless.
- Cut out modern geometric shapes (such as an arch or a double circle) using shape cutters.
- Punch a clean hole near the top edge for the jump ring.
- Bake on a parchment-lined sheet according to clay package instructions.
- Once fully baked and cooled, sand the pieces under water with fine-grit wet/dry sandpaper to smooth the edges and expose crisp terrazzo stone chips. Add jump rings and hardware.
Tips and Variations
- Tip: Sanding wet under running water prevents clay dust from rising and creates an ultra-smooth stone finish.
- Variation: Apply a glossy coat of resin or glaze over the terrazzo to make the colors pop with high-shine polish.
